DOST to Undertake Science & Tech Caravan in Laoag City
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office 1 is set to undertake a Science and Technology Caravan (S&T Caravan) to showcase DOST 1 programs, projects, and activities through exhibits, public forums, and trainings. This is intended to create awareness on appropriate technologies that could benefit the people in the community. At the same time, this activity could motivate the interest of students through scholarships and enhance their creativity, skills, and talents.
The S&T Caravan will take off on January 26 to 28, 2018 at the Laoag City auditorium. The DOST 1 is mandated to bring the benefits of science and technology closer to the people in the countryside. It underscores the need for a more focussed campaign and advocacy for the appreciation of science and technology among the people in the barangays.
A Memorandum of Agreement has been entered into by the DOST 1 and the City Government of Laoag represented by Regional Director, Dr. Armando Q. Ganal and Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas, respectively. On the one hand, the DOST shall provide the appropriate interventions in the areas of technology development, training, adoption and commercialization with the corresponding technical and consultancy services needed. It shall develop the S&T capabilities of the various sectors in Laoag City and establish the Laoag City Science & Technology Coordinating Council as the forefront of all S&T programs and activities in the community.
The Laoag City government, on the other hand, shall designate a Coordinator for the S&T Caravan, invite participants, provide the venue, and give the needed logistics for the S&T Caravan Resource Speakers and participants.
Targeted participants include the Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), City Health Officers/Doctors, School Teachers and Students, Farmers, Fishermen, Housewives, Vendors, and other individuals interested in putting up their own small to medium businesses.
