NEWSFLASH: On May 1, 2023, the installation of the Underwater Sculpture Museum for Marine Ecosystem Regeneration at the Port of Currimao was launched, which aims to address the degradation of the marine ecosystem as well as to boost tourism in the area.
Twenty sculptures weighing more than 500 kg. will be submerged by naval vessel BRP Waray LC288 under the Currimao Sea and will function as artificial coral reefs which serve as nurseries for growing fish and protect the shoreline from erosion.
The marine ecosystem regeneration project is the brainchild of neurologist and art patron, Dr. Joven Cuanang of Pinto Art Museum together with Cong. Angelo Marcos Barba of the 2nd District of Ilocos Norte in coordination with LGU Currimao headed by Mayor Edward Quilala. Among other visitors, Mayor Michael Marcos Keon attended the launching activity.
